Participants will learn the importance of high-quality teaching practices and learning environments including classroom setup, materials, and behavior guidance. • Participants will discuss the importance of health & safety in the classroom and socialization groups and how to stay in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards. • Participants will learn how observing and assessing children’s skills supports lesson planning and individualization. • Participants will discuss classroom supports for children with disabilities and dual language learners.

What You Need to Know

All Head Start programs require research-based and best practices be implemented throughout the program. Providing services to children and families includes understanding high-quality environments, lesson planning, health & safety, and supporting all children in their development.

  • Participants learn how to design high-quality environments including material selection, room design, and zoning. Content is EHS and HS appropriate.

  • Particpants use the Environmental Planning for to discuss how they will facilitate room layout, effective teaching practices, support dual language learners, add materials for learning, and provide learning through meals.

  • Participants learn about individualizing for children, taking observations, and assessing child development.

  • Participants learn the function of lesson planning and adapting the plan for children's needs.

  • Participants discuss high-quality teaching practices to use in classrooms with children to support children's development.
